Sri Lanka’s reputation as the “Island of Gems” dates back over two thousand years. Ancient travellers like Marco Polo wrote of discovering the island’s precious stones. The blue sapphire worn in the British Crown jewels and the giant “Star of India” originate from Sri Lankan soil. Centuries of mining and craftsmanship have given our country a distinguished place in the global gem trade.
The gem fields of Ratnapura, meaning “City of Gems,” have produced sapphires, rubies, alexandrites and a variety of semi‑precious stones. Traditionally, pits were dug by hand and stones were separated using panning techniques passed down through generations. Today, while mining practices have modernised, many small‑scale miners still follow sustainable, low‑impact methods to protect the environment.
Vevri sources stones directly from artisanal miners and gem auctions in Ratnapura and Elahera. We work closely with gem cutters and lapidarists who transform rough stones into jewels that reveal the natural brilliance within. Our collection ranges from deep blue sapphires and pigeon‑blood rubies to spectacular padparadscha sapphires—a pinkish‑orange stone unique to Sri Lanka.
Each gem comes with certification documenting its origin and characteristics. We believe in ethical sourcing and ensure that every stone is mined under fair labour conditions. Customers are welcome to tour our workshop and witness the artistry that goes into selecting and cutting each gem.
Our jewellery atelier brings together master craftsmen and contemporary designers. Pieces are designed in consultation with clients, ensuring that every creation is personal and meaningful. Traditional motifs, such as the stylised lotus and the “sesath” (ceremonial fan), are incorporated into modern designs that suit both everyday wear and special occasions.
We use precious metals—including gold, platinum and silver—and specialise in settings that enhance each stone’s natural beauty. Our team can also reset heirloom gems and refurbish vintage jewellery, giving treasured pieces new life.
